The Annual Renewal period occurs between the first week of September and October 31 each year. The practice permit renewal form will be available to registrants in the Registrant Portal during this period.
Registrants who do not have a complete and approved renewal form by Friday, October 31 will have their practice permit suspended and will not be able to practice dental hygiene as of November 1. Practicing dental hygiene in the province of Alberta without holding a valid practice permit is a punishable contravention of the Health Professions Act and may result in a referral to the Complaints Director for further action.
Reminder: ALL registrants on the general register are required to renew their practice permit annually, regardless of their initial registration date with the College.
If You Do Not Plan to Renew Your Registration
Submit the "Cancel My Registration" form in the Registrant Portal if you do not plan to renew your registration for the 2025 – 2026 permit year. You can select any cancellation date, from one day after the date you are filling out the form, up until October 31, 2025. Your registration will be canceled on the date you specify in this form.
If you cancel your registration and would like to return to the General Register at a later date, ensure you understand the requirements and fees for Reinstatement.
If the College does not receive a renewal form or cancellation form you by October 31, your registration will be suspended automatically on November 1. If your registration remains suspended as of 11:59pm MT on November 30, your registration will be cancelled by the College on December 1. In both cases, you and any current employers listed on the Employment tab in the Registrant Portal will be contacted regarding your registration status. Your registration history will also reflect that your registration was suspended and/or cancelled for failure to renew.
Taking a Break From Practicing Dental Hygiene
The College does not have a non-practicing register or maternity leave status. Registrants who are taking a break from practicing dental hygiene (e.g. going on maternity leave) have two options for the upcoming Annual Renewal:
- Remain on the General Register: If you choose to stay registered, you must renew your practice permit during the upcoming Annual Renewal period (early September – October 31). You must still meet all requirements for renewal (e.g. CPR, PLI), regardless of your employment status.
- Cancel Your Registration: If you prefer to cancel your registration, you can fill out the "Cancel My Registration" form. Should you wish to return to practice in the future, you may reapply through the Reinstatement process. Visit the Reinstatement webpage for complete information and up-to-date requirements for reinstatement.

Renewal Fees
Ensure that you understand the required fees for Annual Renewal. Fees must be paid at the time that you submit your renewal form. Turn off your pop-up blockers before beginning the renewal form to ensure the payment pop-up appears. Your renewal form will not be reviewed or processed by College staff until payment has been received.
The annual practice permit fee for the 2025/26 permit year remains at $599.
An administrative fee of $150 will be applied if:
- Your form is submitted after October 14 at 11:59 PM (MT);
- Your form is submitted before October 14 at 11:59 PM (MT), but your practice permit fee has not been paid by October 14 at 11:59 PM (MT); or
- Your form is submitted before October 14 at 11:59 PM (MT), but contains knowingly inaccurate or misleading information or documents.
A late fee of $119.80 will apply to renewal forms that are not complete and cannot be approved by the College by 11:59pm MT on October 31.
