National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The Federal Government recently passed legislation to make today, September 30th, a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. September 30th also marks Orange Shirt Day, which is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion events that took place in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013. The College encourages registrants to commit to learning about the rich and diverse cultures and experiences of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples year-round. 

The Government of Canada provides many resources to read, watch, and engage with to learn more about First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. 

The College recommends the following activities as Continuing Competence options for registrants to complement their professional development: 

• The free, online Indigenous Canada certificate course provided by the University of Alberta, and 
• The film The Unforgotten, a five-part anthology that uncovers different experiences tied to the health outcomes of Indigenous peoples living in Canada, accompanied by an educational toolkit created in collaboration with the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority, to help viewers understand, reflect and discuss the issues raised in the film.
